Microsoft and NVIDIA Draft a Standard for AI Agents

At Microsoft’s Build conference, the two companies did not just announce products. They announced a division of labor. NVIDIA will supply the acceleration layer — the GPUs and the software that talks to them — and Microsoft will supply the platform, from Windows on the desktop to the cloud to servers running on-premises. Together, they argued, the combination defines how AI agents will be built and deployed across the enterprise.

The technical details matter less than the claim underneath them. An AI agent is a program that does more than respond: it plans, takes actions, uses tools and makes decisions on behalf of a user. For those programs to run reliably, they need a common set of services — memory, identity, permissions, orchestration — that every agent can call. Microsoft and NVIDIA are proposing that their stack become that common layer, and their pitch to developers is the classic platform argument: build on our standards and your agents will run everywhere we reach.

The timing is no accident. The two companies are seeking to define the runtime for the agentic AI transition at the moment the market for agents is forming, and both have something the other needs. NVIDIA controls the silicon that makes agents fast. Microsoft controls the operating systems, the developer tools and the corporate distribution channels that make agents reachable. A developer who wants an agent that runs on a Windows laptop, scales in Azure, and can be moved to a customer’s own data center is being handed a complete answer — with the implication that the answer belongs to Microsoft and NVIDIA.

The announcement carries a second message that is harder to miss: Microsoft is done being defined by its relationship with OpenAI. The Verge published a deep look at the widening split between the two companies this week, and the reporting included a striking line from Microsoft’s AI chief, who said the company must prove it can do everything it needs to do on its own. The statement is a public declaration of independence from the partnership that built the modern Microsoft AI business — and a signal that the company now sees OpenAI as a competitor, not just a collaborator.

The estrangement has been building for years. Microsoft invested billions in OpenAI, integrated its models into Windows, Office and Azure, and built a cloud business on the assumption that the relationship was permanent. OpenAI, for its part, has moved to build its own distribution, its own devices and its own customer relationships, and has begun its own IPO process. The two companies now compete for enterprise customers, for talent and for the same GPU supply. The Build announcement is Microsoft’s answer: we no longer need to rent intelligence from a partner we are racing.

The deal with NVIDIA fills the gap OpenAI used to fill. For years, the models that powered Microsoft’s AI features came from a single supplier with whom Microsoft had a special relationship. The new stack signals that Microsoft intends to treat models as swappable — its own MAI family of models, developed in-house, is designed to run on the same infrastructure — while the platform underneath remains Microsoft’s. NVIDIA, which sells to everyone, has no such conflict: its interest is in making sure every agent, regardless of who trained it, runs on NVIDIA silicon.

The competitive stakes extend beyond Microsoft and OpenAI. Google has its own agent platform and its own silicon strategy. Amazon is building agents on top of its AWS infrastructure. Meta is pushing its open-weight models into enterprise deployments. Every one of them is competing for the same prize: to be the place where agents are built, deployed and managed. By pairing with NVIDIA, Microsoft is trying to lock up the substrate — the layer beneath the models — before anyone else can claim it.

The risks are familiar from earlier platform wars. Standards only matter if developers adopt them, and developers have been burned before by platforms that promised openness and delivered lock-in. Microsoft’s history with developer ecosystems cuts both ways: the company is trusted to keep tools stable, but its history of tying products together has made some developers wary. NVIDIA, meanwhile, faces its own questions about whether its dominance of AI silicon is durable as custom chips from Google, Amazon and others gain ground.

For enterprises, the practical consequence is simpler. A company deploying AI agents this year faces a choice about which stack to standardize on, and the Microsoft-NVIDIA combination is now the most complete answer on the table: hardware, operating system, cloud and on-premises support in a single bundle. Whether that bundle becomes the industry standard or a reminder of how quickly platform alliances fray, the direction is set — the AI agent business is now a platform war, and the two companies have chosen their side together.
