The architecture roadmap unveiled at the conference is Intel’s argument that the agents are coming, and that x86, in its hands, will be ready.
The presentation described a roadmap built around the workloads agents will create. Agentic systems differ from traditional applications in ways that matter for chip design: they are conversational, unpredictable, and bursty, alternating between short prompts and long chains of reasoning, and they depend on memory and interconnect as much as on raw compute. Intel’s roadmap, according to people familiar with the material, is organized around those characteristics, with new memory hierarchies, faster interconnects, and instruction-level support for the patterns agents exhibit.
The strategic logic is defensive and offensive at once.
