Micron and Qualcomm Team Up on AI Chips for Cars

Micron Technology Inc. and Qualcomm Inc. have signed a cooperation agreement to develop AI-driven automotive chipsets, Reuters reported, pairing the world’s largest memory maker with the dominant supplier of chips for smartphones in a push into the car of the future.

The partnership is a bet that the next growth market for semiconductors is the automobile. Modern cars are becoming computers on wheels, packed with sensors, screens and AI systems that process everything from lane markings to the driver’s voice, and each of those systems needs memory. Qualcomm brings the processors that run the car’s intelligence; Micron brings the storage and memory chips that feed them.

For Micron, the deal is a hedge against the cycle that has defined its business. The company’s fortunes rise and fall with DRAM and NAND prices, which swing with the boom-and-bust rhythm of the memory industry, and the traditional markets for those chips, personal computers and smartphones, have stopped growing. Automotive is one of the few categories where demand is still expanding, and where the content per vehicle, the amount of memory in each car, is rising sharply.

For Qualcomm, the partnership extends a strategy it has pursued for years: diversifying beyond smartphones, where its chips dominate but the market is saturated. The company has built an automotive business around its Snapdragon platforms, which handle everything from infotainment to advanced driver assistance, and it has signed up most of the world’s major automakers. Adding a memory partner with Micron’s scale strengthens the bundle it can offer.

The memory content of a modern car is easy to underestimate. A basic sedan a decade ago carried a few gigabytes of memory for engine control and infotainment. A current electric vehicle with driver-assistance features carries dozens of gigabytes, spread across the modules that run the instrument cluster, the navigation system, the cameras and the AI models that interpret what they see. Each step up the autonomy ladder multiplies that number, which is why memory makers see the car as a second smartphone, in volume terms, growing out of a market that was nearly flat for years.

Micron has been building toward this for a while. The company supplies memory to most of the world’s automakers, and it has invested in automotive-grade products, versions of its DRAM and flash chips designed to survive the temperature swings, vibrations and two-decade lifespans that cars demand and phones don’t. The partnership with Qualcomm formalizes what had been a loose relationship and gives the two companies a way to co-design chips for the specific needs of vehicles, rather than adapt consumer products after the fact.

The automotive chip market has become one of the industry’s most contested arenas. Nvidia sells its own platforms for self-driving systems, Mobileye has built a business on driver assistance, and a wave of startups has entered the fray. Qualcomm’s bet is that most cars will need less than full autonomy and more than basic assistance, a middle ground where its platforms and Micron’s memory can serve a broad range of vehicles.

The timing is notable. Traditional DRAM and NAND demand has cooled, and memory makers have been looking for new outlets for their capacity. Automakers, meanwhile, are emerging from the chip shortage of the early 2020s, when they discovered how dependent their businesses had become on semiconductors, and they are signing longer-term supply deals with chip makers to avoid a repeat. The Micron-Qualcomm agreement fits that pattern of lockstep planning.

The competition is crowded and getting more so. Nvidia’s Drive platform has become the standard for premium self-driving systems, and its chips appear in cars from Mercedes-Benz and several Chinese manufacturers. Tesla designs its own silicon, and a generation of startups has emerged to sell AI chips for cars. Qualcomm’s answer has been to offer a range of platforms that scale from entry-level to flagship, and its automotive order book has grown into one of the company’s most valuable assets, with automakers designing its chips into models that will be built for the rest of the decade.

The lessons of the 2021 chip shortage hang over the whole endeavor. When the pandemic disrupted semiconductor supply chains, automakers were the hardest hit, idling factories and losing billions because they couldn’t get chips they had once taken for granted. The experience pushed the industry to lock in supply, and deals like the Micron-Qualcomm agreement are part of that response: automakers want their chip suppliers talking to each other, so that the parts arrive together, in the right quantities, on the right schedule. Whether that resilience holds through the next disruption will depend on how deeply these partnerships are wired into the supply chain.

The financial details of the partnership weren’t disclosed, and neither company said when the first products would appear. Chip development cycles in automotive run long, often three to five years from design to production, because the safety requirements are stricter than in consumer electronics and the validation process is longer. The deal’s impact on revenue will be measured in years, not quarters.

For the industry, the agreement is a sign of how the automotive and technology worlds have converged. A memory company that once sold chips for desktop computers and a phone-chip maker are now partners in the business of making cars think. The vehicles on the road in the 2030s will be built by automakers, but the intelligence inside them will come from deals like this one.
