SpaceX Files Reveal a 10-Gigawatt Solar Factory in Texas

The permit applications landed in Bastrop County’s records office weeks before anyone noticed them, and they describe something no rocket company has built before: a solar manufacturing plant with 10 gigawatts of annual capacity, split across two floors of a single facility outside Austin. SpaceX filed the paperwork as part of an expansion of its existing Bastrop site, according to documents reviewed by local news outlets, and the scale — 5 gigawatts of solar cells per floor — would make it one of the largest solar production sites in the world.

SpaceX’s solar-production lead, Noah Cowles, posted this week that the company is building what he called one of the most advanced solar-cell factories in the industry and is hiring engineers for the work. The IPO registration statement SpaceX filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on May 20 said the company plans to double the size of its Bastrop facility to produce solar cells and next-generation Starlink products. Taken together, the filings and the post describe an ambition that extends well beyond rockets.

Power for the constellation

The logic begins with Starlink. The satellite internet constellation that has become SpaceX’s revenue engine now spans thousands of satellites in low-Earth orbit, and each new satellite generation demands more electrical power than the last. SpaceX has said the next Starlink versions will use larger panels and more power-hungry payloads, and the company has concluded it needs to control the solar supply chain rather than buy cells from third-party manufacturers.

That is the same vertical-integration playbook SpaceX has used across its business. The company builds its own rocket engines, its own launch towers, its own satellite buses and, increasingly, its own ground equipment. Solar cells were one of the last major components it bought from outside suppliers — its satellites have used cells from commercial manufacturers for years — and the Bastrop factory is the company’s answer to the question of where the next generation of cells comes from.

Why Bastrop

The location is not accidental. Bastrop County sits roughly thirty miles southeast of Austin, near SpaceX’s Starlink production facilities and within reach of the company’s test and development sites in Central Texas. The area has become SpaceX’s manufacturing heartland: the company operates a sprawling complex in the county that assembles Starlink user terminals, and land records show SpaceX has been acquiring parcels around its existing site for years.

The scale of the solar plant is the striking part. Ten gigawatts of annual capacity would dwarf most solar manufacturing lines outside China — the largest U.S. plants built to date are measured in single-digit gigawatts — and would make SpaceX, a company best known for launch vehicles, one of the country’s biggest solar producers by volume. Industry analysts noted this week that the capacity appears sized for far more than Starlink’s own needs, suggesting SpaceX intends to sell cells or panels commercially, or to power its ground operations directly.

The Tesla connection

The timing also brings Tesla back into the picture. Tesla posted multiple solar-manufacturing job openings this week in Brookshire, Texas, near Houston — the same location where Tesla plans to build its Megapack energy-storage factory. The two companies share a founder in Elon Musk, though they are separate public and private companies respectively, and the parallel job postings raised questions about whether the pair are coordinating solar manufacturing plans or simply pursuing the same trend toward domestic clean-energy production.

For SpaceX, solar manufacturing fits a broader energy strategy. The company has discussed building out its own power infrastructure for its launch sites and data centers, and the Bastrop plant could serve both purposes: cells for Starlink satellites and panels for ground facilities. The IPO filing emphasizes that the doubling of Bastrop will support both solar-cell production and new Starlink products, tying the factory directly to the revenue story the company will present to public investors.

What it means for the market

The solar industry is watching for a different reason. U.S. solar manufacturing has struggled for years to compete with Chinese production, which controls the vast majority of global cell and panel capacity. A 10-gigawatt plant built with SpaceX’s engineering culture and capital would be a significant addition to domestic capacity, and its success — or failure — will be read as a test of whether American manufacturing can scale in a commodity business where China sets the price.

There are also questions about the technology. Most advanced solar cells today use silicon, but SpaceX has been working on more efficient designs, and the company’s satellite cells are among the highest-efficiency products in orbit. Whether the Bastrop line produces conventional panels or advanced cells for space will determine how much of the plant’s output can be sold commercially. People familiar with the plans say the initial production will be aimed at Starlink, with commercial sales following once the lines are proven.

The broader arc is the one Musk has described for years: SpaceX as an integrated industrial company, not just a launch provider. Rockets, satellites, ground terminals, solar cells and energy storage form a closed loop — the constellation needs power, the power comes from cells the company makes itself, and the whole system is built on property SpaceX owns. The Bastrop factory is the newest piece of that loop, and the permit filings make it concrete in a way press releases never could.

For investors weighing the SpaceX IPO, the solar plant shows how the company thinks about its balance sheet: it will spend whatever it takes to control its own supply chain, and it expects the assets to appreciate as the industries around it grow. The 10-gigawatt facility is a bet that solar is becoming as strategic as launch — and that the company that builds its own power will have an advantage over the companies that buy it.
