Apple Vision Pro Engineering Chief Leaves for OpenAI Hardware Role

The vice president of engineering for Apple’s Vision Pro headset has left the company to join OpenAI, where he will lead hardware development, according to people familiar with the move. The departure is the latest in a series of exits from Apple’s spatial computing team, and it hands OpenAI an executive with deep experience shipping complex consumer hardware at a moment when the company is moving from software into devices.

The executive, whose departure had been rumored for weeks, is joining OpenAI’s hardware organization at a time when the lab has signaled plans to build its own devices. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has said the company intends to develop hardware that complements its models, and he has identified South Korea as the test market for the first device. The hiring of a senior Apple engineer gives that ambition credibility: building hardware at scale requires experience with supply chains, manufacturing and the brutal economics of consumer electronics, none of which OpenAI has in-house.

For Apple, the loss is the latest blow to a division that has struggled to find its footing. The Vision Pro launched to strong reviews and modest sales, with its $3,499 price tag limiting the addressable market. The recruiting raid cuts both ways. OpenAI’s hardware ambitions have drawn skepticism from industry veterans who note that no software company has successfully made the leap into significant consumer hardware since Apple itself, and that the failure rate among well-funded attempts is high. Google’s hardware division has remained a small part of its business despite years of investment. Meta’s virtual reality division has burned through billions with its mixed-reality headsets still a niche product. The pattern suggests that success in hardware is not simply a matter of engineering talent, but of organizational culture, supply chain discipline and the patience to absorb years of losses.

Altman has framed the hardware push as essential to OpenAI’s long-term strategy. The company’s models increasingly need dedicated devices to reach their potential, he has argued, and control of hardware would give OpenAI the same vertical integration that Apple and NVIDIA enjoy. The Korea test market is a strategic choice: the country has one of the most tech-forward consumer bases in the world, dense 5G coverage and a culture of early adoption, and Korean manufacturers have the component supply chains that a new device would need.

The appointment also signals OpenAI’s willingness to pay for senior talent. The company has been expanding aggressively, planning to double its headcount to about 8,000 employees, and it has shown a readiness to offer compensation packages that compete with the most lucrative in the industry. Apple, which has historically been able to retain its senior engineers with a combination of stock and mission, has found that calculus harder in the AI era, as the largest labs offer engineers the chance to work on frontier models and, now, frontier hardware.

The implications for the XR industry are significant. Apple’s Vision Pro was supposed to validate the market for spatial computing, and its slow sales have been used by skeptics to argue that the category is a decade away from mainstream adoption. The exodus of senior engineers from Apple’s team does not change the fundamental technology trajectory, analysts say, but it does weaken the company best positioned to drive the market forward. Meanwhile, OpenAI’s entry into hardware adds a new variable: a company with no consumer brand, no retail presence and no manufacturing experience, but with the most talked-about AI technology in the world.

For now, the move is a win for OpenAI’s recruiting narrative. The company can tell prospective hires that it is attracting the best engineering talent from Apple, and it can tell investors that its hardware strategy has substance behind it. For Apple, the response will come in the form of products: a more affordable headset, a lighter pair of glasses, or something entirely different. Until then, the company’s spatial computing team will be rebuilding while its former engineers build elsewhere.

The move also highlights the shifting balance of power in tech hiring. OpenAI’s offer reportedly included a compensation package that rivals the top of the industry, and its hardware ambitions give engineers something Apple’s spatial computing group no longer offers: the chance to build a device from a blank sheet. Whether the bet pays off will depend on execution, but the signal to the market is unmistakable.
