Micron Technology said it will invest $10 billion in an artificial intelligence research laboratory in Boise, Idaho, its home city, and President Donald Trump on the evening of Aug. 27 called the memory maker “one of the hottest companies in the world,” citing what he described as incredible numbers. Micron’s chief executive said the same day that AI memory supply is so tight he sees no end in sight.
The lab will anchor Micron’s research into the memory and storage technologies that AI systems depend on, including high-bandwidth memory, the specialized chips that sit beside AI accelerators. Micron has been one of the three companies, along with SK Hynix and Samsung, that dominate the market, and it has ridden the AI boom to record results as data center builders snap up every unit of HBM they can get.
Trump’s public praise carries weight beyond the compliment. The president has made semiconductor production in the U.S. a policy priority, and his administration has backed that goal with subsidies and tax incentives. A presidential endorsement of Micron’s investment reinforces the company’s standing in Washington and signals that its expansion plans have political support.
The Boise lab is part of a broader spending program. Micron has been building new factories in the U.S. and abroad, including a large memory plant in New York that is slated to be among the biggest semiconductor facilities in the country. The company has said it expects to spend heavily for years to keep pace with AI-driven demand.
The memory market’s current conditions explain the scale of the investment. HBM supply has been constrained for more than a year, and prices for conventional memory have also risen as data centers buy everything available. Micron’s chief executive, in remarks on Aug. 27, said demand continues to outrun supply and that the shortage has no visible end, echoing warnings from competitors.
The economics favor expansion. Micron’s profit margins have expanded dramatically during the boom, and the company has said it will reinvest those profits in capacity and research rather than return them all to shareholders. Trump’s comments on Aug. 27, made the same evening he praised Nvidia’s earnings, fit a pattern of the administration embracing AI companies. The president has touted American leadership in AI and semiconductors, and his public support has been valuable to companies seeking federal approvals and incentives. For Micron, the presidential spotlight came at a moment when the company is negotiating the details of its U.S. expansion.
The investment also carries risk. Memory is a cyclical business, and booms in the past have been followed by sharp downturns when supply caught up with demand. Micron is committing tens of billions of dollars at the top of a cycle, and if AI demand matures more slowly than expected, the company could find itself with excess capacity. Micron’s research agenda underlines why the company needs the lab. The company is also developing memory for edge devices, automotive systems and a new class of compute-in-memory products that could change how AI models run. Research of that breadth requires facilities close to the engineers doing the work, which is part of the logic behind locating the lab in Boise rather than overseas.
For now, the mood in Boise is celebratory. A $10 billion lab, a presidential endorsement and a market that cannot get enough of the company’s products: Micron’s story has rarely looked better. The question is whether the good times last as long as the construction schedule. For a company that has survived every downturn the memory industry has produced, the answer will be written in the next few years of orders, prices and the technology its new lab delivers.
